China Controls 73% of Lithium| One Technology Is About to Change That Forever
The global lithium supply chain is structurally broken. China controls 73 percent of the world’s lithium chemical refining capacity — a dominance built not through geological luck but through two decades of state-backed industrial strategy. Despite holding less than 7 percent of global reserves, Chinese entities will control 81 percent of lithium refining by 2027. In January of that year, the IRA’s Foreign Entity of Concern rules take full effect, threatening to strip the $7,500 federal EV tax credit from most Western vehicles whose batteries pass through Chinese refineries. Direct Lithium Extraction is the technology engineered to break this chokepoint. Using industrial-scale adsorption columns, ion-exchange resin vessels, and selective membrane filtration systems, DLE extracts battery-grade lithium carbonate from underground brine in hours — not the 12 to 18 months required by conventional evaporation ponds — with recovery rates exceeding 90 percent. Critically, DLE operates on brine resources previously considered uneconomic: oilfield produced water, geothermal brines, and low-concentration aquifers down to 10 parts per million lithium that evaporation technology cannot touch. Commercial deployment is underway now. Standard Lithium and Equinor’s South West Arkansas project — backed by a $225 million Department of Energy grant — achieved multiple operational milestones at its El Dorado demonstration plant in April 2026, targeting 45,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium carbonate annually from 2028. ExxonMobil’s Saltwerx subsidiary received Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission royalty approval in June 2025, targeting 100,000 tonnes per year by 2030. California’s Salton Sea geothermal brine holds enough lithium for approximately 375 million EV batteries — extractable without a single open-cut mine. The DLE market, valued at $1.54 billion in 2026, is forecast to reach $5.72 billion by 2036 at a compound annual growth rate of 14 percent. The geopolitical arithmetic is straightforward: every tonne of lithium extracted by Western DLE is one tonne that bypasses a Chinese refinery permanently.
